The Work Behind Wellness

For almost five years at Wonder Woman Fitness, I’ve watched women walk through our doors wanting change.
Not just aesthetic change, although of course many arrive wanting to feel more comfortable in their clothes again. But deeper change too. Better sleep. More energy. Less pain. More confidence. Strength. Routine. Momentum. A sense of control in bodies that often feel unfamiliar during perimenopause and menopause.
And like most trainers, I’ve spent years trying to help clients stay motivated between sessions.
We’ve run little in-house challenges before.
100 squats a day. Longest plank of the month. Walk 10km every day for 3 weeks. You know the type.
Fun? Absolutely.
Effective? To a point.
But this was different.
This was our first real challenge.
A proper, month long, all-in event. Follow-along workout videos. Meal prep ideas. Weekly bonus tasks. Accountability. Focus on movement, nutrition and sleep. Four weeks dedicated to building habits instead of chasing quick fixes.
And honestly?
What an epic experience.
Firstly, I’m just going to say it. I loved it.
Yes, I did the challenge too.
And no, I did not breeze through it while floating around eating kale and feeling spiritually superior because I’m the trainer.
Far from it.
I’m deeply addicted to chocolate. The kind of person who can somehow “accidentally” eat half a block while answering emails. I had to consciously think about what I was eating, when I was eating, and how to manage the sugar cravings that followed me around like a Labrador who’s heard the rustle of a snack packet.
But that was the point.
How good is it when you actually learn something about yourself?
That’s what I kept saying to the participants throughout the challenge. The menoFIT challenge, our slightly menopausal version of the Gen Z 75HARD trend, was never really about perfection. It was about awareness. About discovering what it actually takes to create change.
Because everyone walks into a gym, a dietitian’s office, a yoga studio, or starts a new wellness plan with a vision in their head. The dream version of themselves. The aspirational “after” photo. The woman who meal preps beautifully, sleeps eight hours, never stress eats and somehow enjoys burpees.
But what this challenge showed is that transformation is not built in one perfect moment.
It’s built in the ordinary ones.
The Tuesday night when you cannot be bothered cooking but do it anyway.
The walk you take when the couch is calling your name.
The decision to go to bed instead of scrolling.
The workout you complete tired, hormonal, stressed or busy.
Real change is work. Quiet work. Repetitive work. Day in. Day out.
As trainers, we can give you tools. And trust me, we love doing that part. We can write programs, film workouts, adjust exercises, connect you with dietitians, pelvic floor physios, menopause specialists and physiotherapists. We can educate you, encourage you and cheer you on.
But we cannot walk your steps for you.
We cannot stand beside every meal making sure your plate has enough protein, fibre and colour on it. We cannot put your phone down for you at night so you get enough sleep. We cannot magically create consistency on your behalf.
That part belongs to you.
That’s the partnership.
And that’s why this challenge was so special.
Because for four weeks, women showed up not just for themselves, but for each other. There was encouragement, honesty, humour, accountability and the shared understanding that yes, this takes effort.
But effort is not a bad thing.
In fact, there’s something incredibly empowering about proving to yourself that you can do hard things. Not perfectly. Not flawlessly. But consistently enough to create momentum.
And perhaps that’s what I loved most.
Not watching women become smaller.
Not watching them punish themselves.
But watching them become more capable, more aware, more disciplined and more confident in what their bodies can do.
That feels like real success to me.
